I had a similar problem, bikes were getting beaten up bouncing around at the back of the trailer. My solution was to have a 2 inch receiver welded to the front of the truck, it barely sticks out at the bottom of the skirt below the bumper.
When I have the bikes on the rack out the front (four bike rack) I don't see them, on my bike I just put the seat all the way down. The height of the bikes is basically in line with the front of the hood, since the hood slopes up and I'm above that I don't even notice them. No more problem with bikes getting beaten up.
