BTDT ... used to have bikes on the back. Too much bouncing. Now we use a rack on the front of the truck, installed a hitch like some have said. Not my favorite solution - everything hangs out so far in front.
Our bikes are fairly nice (we do lots of riding) and the kids bikes will probably not be far behind. My next step is to put a set of Yakima or Thule bars on the top of the truck and be done with it. About $300 + racks but they will be more secure and not in front or behind. My 0.02 :)
EDIT - haven't tried the pin box rack yet. I have a shortbed truck and not sure about clearance but it's worth a measure...
