Love my Toy Hauler.....except one "small" thing.

We have had two 5th wheels and now are in a Toy Hauler. I love the toy hauler and our family has settled into camping in this smaller trailer. This summer however we have noticed one "small" problem. The black and grey water tanks are VERY SMALL compared to our previous 5th wheels. They are both 32 gallons.

How difficult is it to install larger tanks? We don't always get full hookup and we don't make it more than about 1.5 days before filling up the grey and about 2 days on the black when the whole family is camping.

TIA

  • Agree on the black tank, never been an issue for us. Grey tank is on long stays due to showers and dishes.
  • I have 50 gallon black and 50 gallon grey in my trailer. 7 days at the dunes with 3 of us and we don't fill up the black. Don't know what you are doing to fill up 32 gallons that quick.
Grey will fill up over that same 7 day trip. Even with being careful. No dish washing, quick showers etc.

Not sure you will have enough room to install a larger tank. A deeper one maybe, but make sure you have supports strong enough to hold more weight.
  • makes me happy i have 80 grey and 60 black on my hauler when i hear this...
  • I always noticed that on all the toy haulers I looked at, the grey and black tank capacity added up to around the same capacity as the fresh water tank. Makes sense that this would be the case since there's no reason to have black and grey tanks the same size as the fresh water tank.
  • Well.....When my son and I go hunting we can make it an entire week, even with Uncle and Grandpa, with these two tanks. Our recent summer camping trips I am referring to are with our family that doesn't include Uncle and Grandpa but DOES include three girls! :) They don't like to use the campground showers or bathrooms. Since we had full hookups recently I didn't mention anything to the girls but I will on our next trip to see how much better it gets.
  • Our back bath sink is piped into the black tank. but other than that buy a cap with the garden hose adapter and drain your gray water on the ground into the bushes or trees.(if its legal) Most state have started changing grey water laws due to the drought and alot of parks are asking you to water trees rather than overloading their septic systems with grey water.
  • How can you fill up a 32 gallon black tank in 1.5 days? It takes our family of three at least 5~7 days to fill the same size tank.
I wonder if your shower or sink is perhaps plumbed into your black tank and that's why it fill so fast. It's not uncommon for manufacturers to do this.
  • wash dishes in a plastic pan, no running water. Navy showers (get wet, lather up, rinse off - done right you are only running the water for 30-60 seconds per shower), Long hair gets washed in the sink with a tub. 32 gallons in the black tank is a lot for 2 days. You may want to look at portable waste tanks to dump mid stay, that said dropping the belly and looking is your only real option to see what is in there.
