Measuring a 5th wheel length

Simple enough question: When I look at brochures for 5th wheels, specifically the length, is it from the pin back to the bumper or the full length, or ???

Appreciate clarification.

You don't have 5 feet beyond the pin. I think I know what you're trying to say about the overhang. But it isn't "forward of the pin", right?

Actually a Titanium trailer will expend 5' past the pin box.

Ah yes! Forgot about those. Thanks.

Sorry Allworth. You wrote it exactly right and I misread it.

  • You can't trust the brochure anyway, so you shop with a tape measure.

Traditionally, and legally as far as DOT is concerned, length is from the kingpin to rearmost.

Most fifthwheels have extended pinboxes today, so overall length and kingpin to bumper length, will be pretty close to the same on those. Within a few inches anyway.
  • Whatever the advertising department wants to claim.

My trailer has five extra feet of cabin extending over the cab of the truck, forward of the pin.

    is it 30'?

    35'?

    36'-2"?

    Manufacturer calls it a 30E35 (30' extended to 35')

    I always ask for a 35' space.
  • Its kinda like asking " How long is a rope" . I don't believe there is a correct answer. When asking for a site, I always go long that way I'm sure it will fit.
  • Usually...front edge of king pin to rear bumper. However it varies, some only use the actual cabin demensions for the length (front cap to rear cap/wall).
  • As far as I know there is no standard way the dealers measure rigs. They sure are not the same as the model number. I know we have a Montana 3400RL model, book indicates it is 38' 4", when measured from pin box to end of ladder on the back it's almost 39'.
