Mid winter trip question

Hey guys,
Wife and I are going to take a trip to New Orleans area over New Years. My question is when would you de-winterize? I could clear the lines at home then just blow them out. Or wait and do it the first stop over of our trip. Not sure as we have never done this before. Thanks, John
  • Check the weather for the next few days.that you will be on the road. than make up your mind.
  • Here in Colorado, it depends on the temperature when we start. If the temperature for the evening before we start is around 32, I de-winterize. If it is too cold, we drive south until we get some warmer weather which is usually at the end of the first day, or roughly 400 miles south.
  • If you'll have full hook-up at the destination, I'd take care of it when you arrive - only takes a few minutes. I'd also re-winterize before leaving cause there's nothing worse Thad doing that job in sub freezing temps. If stopping along the way, take a couple jugs of water for the trip.
  • We make a trip to Fla for a few wks every Jan. I have to winterize prior to the trip so I dewinterize in Fla & winterize again the morning of departure for home. The slowest thing is draining the HW tank, but it still only takes a few minutes.

I take my empty antifreeze jugs with me to capture the antifreeze from my low drains & reuse it. I only need 1 additional new gal. I have full hook ups so I never use the fresh tank.
  • When we've done winter trips, I leave everything winterized until we got to our destination, then de-winterized. Before heading back to Indiana, I winterized again.

We're going to Florida over Christmas. I'm not de-winterizing until we get there, even though we're planning on taking 2 days for travel there, and 2 days for travel back.

We add no water to anything until we've reached our destination. Between home and "there" we have containers with water, and we use a port-a-potty that can be dumped in any bathroom toilet, rinsed and used again.

You never know what the temperatures are going to be, even heading South. I play it safe. I simply cannot afford the time or the money to replace frozen "anything" except, frozen T-bone and Rib-Eye steaks once they been cooked! That's the ONLY thing that get's thawed on our winter trips!
  • I do it the first stop that is warm enough. Put the clorox into the lines for three hours then let the FW tank drain while on the road. The tank should be empty by the time we get to the next campground.
  • We usually de-winterize when we get far enough south that the overnight temps aren't below freezing. Until then, we flush the toilet with antifreeze; and use bottled water.
  • I let the weather tell me what I'm going to do. I look for a weather window before I plan a start south. Most years I can get water into the tank so I have use of the bath on the road. Some years, the cold wins and I just bring a couple gallons of water. I push my first day to make southern Va. so I'll set everything up there. While I have frozen the hose in Ga., with heat in the trailer I don't worry about a freeze up.

  • We do use the commode & black tank on our way to Fla. We carry winter windshield wash to flush, as it will not freeze & cost less than antifreeze.
