Mobile suites weight and mobility question

There is a 36' MS for sale in our area that the couple had purchased to live in while they were house hunting for 3 years. The pics look really good. She said that this unit is NOT for weekend camping, due to its being 12,800 lbs. dry weight.

Is what she said true? We will need to live in ours for a while but will be doing some traveling as well. Is this weight not a good choice for traveling around?

  • Thank you! Will pulling a trailer that heavy with a dually take more gas than a lighter trailer, like say around 7,800 lbs. dry weight with a smaller truck?
  • We travel for extended periods of time, anywhere from a month to three months, 2-3 times a year in our 36' Mobile Suites. We rarely stay anywhere longer than a week, most often moving every 3-5 days. We went to Alaska and Canada for 3 1/2 months in the summer of 2013. Yes, our MS is heavy, but our dually does a great job of pulling it. It is large, sometimes we have a problem finding sites large enough for us, particularly in the National Parks and some Forest Service Parks. We use it for everything from boondocking to using it like a hotel room. Good luck with your decision.
  • Sounds like she is repeating what the salesman told them when they were looking for one to live in.

"Ma'am...that one is good for traveling but THIS one----now that is what you what for living in. Yes Ma'am THIS is nice and heavy, sturdy model just right for parking and living in."

Next day, another person is looking to buy.
"we want a unit for traveling"

"Well now, that one is OK but THIS one is just what you are looking for. A nice, sturdy unit built for traveling. Them other ones are pretty light weight and won't hold up like this one will to traveling"

    Same unit....two different scenarios
    Just salesman hype to up-sale.
  • Not an issue if you have a large enough truck to pull it.

With dry weight at 12,800 lbs., traveling weight will probably be up around 15,000-16,000 lbs. with a pin weight around 3,000 lbs. You'll need a pretty healthy truck and, personally, I would want a dually.
  • That statement makes no sense, we are fulltiming across this great country of ours in a 5th Wheel with a Dry Weight of 14,040 lbs.
Our last 5th Wheel that we had for 3 years fulltime and we made a number of cross country trips in had a dry weight of 12,970 lbs.
Mobile Suites are a great 5th Wheel with very solid construction, but they are heavy.
Nothing wrong with being heavy but it does take a right sized truck to pull these large / heavy 5th Wheels.
