Moving a 5th/W

My cousins husband well ask me to pull a 5th wheel home for him he had just bought. He did not have his 5th wheel hitch installed yet. I readily agreed but after arriving at the site where he bought it problems begin to surface. I got stuck up trying to move it onto the paved road. This took a couple of hours and lots of work to get it unstuck plus my truck was a mess. Then I noticed that the brakes apparently did not work on the trailer, it shoved me down the road on hills. Then just before we got it to his house, a tire blew out!! Upon closer examination I noticed all the other tires had sidewall cracks, I'm surprised we made it with only one blow out.

So just be careful, know the shape of the unit you are pulling and realize the legal implications of an accident or other breakdown.

ask a lot of questions about where specifically is going. I got burned by a "friend" that wanted his newly purchased used 5th moved to his recreation property where there was "lots of room". Yes "lots of room" for the 38' 5th wheel but no room for the attached truck and next to no room to maneuver. 3 hours to drive there and then another 4 hours trying to make it work once I got there. I will never do that again unless I personally see where the 5th wheel is going exactly.

Road ready, $50 hook fee + $3.00 a loaded mile.

It is not a friend it is a friends friend.

But to the OP is the rig road worthy? How long has it sat on those tires and how old are the tires?
Brakes checked out? How about brake lights.

If you do it be aware of the liability issue. Your friend would never sue you but his friend just might and wouldn't it be a kick in the Ash if you ended up paying for his rig then Having your insurance rates get jacked up and losing the friend because of the animosity because of litigation. Too often in this world people who start out with good intentions get the shaft. The law of unintended consequences applies here.

It is hard to believe that so many would not try to help a friend...so sad the way we have changed.

IS the RV parked near where you are now - or going to near where you are now? If you have to drive 50 miles to start the 280 mile drive, then it is 350 miles back home, that will add to the time, and even mean one night along the route. So you are looking at a minimum of 560 miles, perhaps 100 more depending on the stop and start points.

If your time is worth $20 an hour, and the truck is going to get 600 - 1,000 miles on it, that is also worth something. You will have 3-6 meals out on the road too- also depending on the distances, and how far you drive in a day, you might have 2-3 overnights, so more meals, and more time out of doing whatever it was that you really wanted to do.

So well over $600 - perhaps under $1,000. A commercial truck can move it too. They will charge more.

Good points made about legal issues with insurance. If something happens and you are under hire offically then all sorts of litigation can commence. Just do it for a friend, then after it's over and safely tucked away he could shoot you some cash but don't take any money before hand !!
