Yeah, I remember hearing that there are plug-in units that can make a non-GPS ipad into a GPS unit, but when you are buying one from scratch, it is about the same cost, give or take, to get it built-in.
iPad or Android maps use online connections to get local maps. If you go in areas of no or poor connections, then the builtin GPS is useless. The commercial GPS units, like Garmin, use satellite to get GPS and have all the maps built internal. I most often need the GPS when I'm in the boonies, and my smart phone is useless.
Give me a Garmin any day.
