...what I want to do.1st the specs on my 5ver (signature). Pin weight 1279gvw 10079dry 7990cargo 2530What I intend:Hitch receiver on the back (weight 150 approx). The entire install is 2" receiver, welded to 2" tubing welded to brackets on both sides that are then welded to frame and the rear bumper. 1000 lbs estimated capacity.To that receiver will be attached a bike (motorcycle) carrier 100 lbs, which will carry a small 124cc bike 250 lbs.Welded on the back bumper will be a box built with slide outs that will contain my generator/converter. Box and generator approx. 120 lbs. The bumper is reinforced by the hitch receiver installation, they are welded and now are one unit, increasing the bumper weight carrying capacity.A friend of mine is helping with this and assures me that there should be no problems with it. He works for, and has for 30 years, a trailer repair/build facility and has dealt with everything from small utilties, TT's and 5vers, all the way up to 18 wheelers (his primary business), flat beds, box trailers the works, and all hitch types and classes.I have a concern though that with 700-800 lbs hanging off the back of my Crusader LITE that it's going to adversly affect my pin weight, specifically, create a light pin condition.I trust my friend, but I also trust my Dr. and always get a second opinion on anything serious, so that's what I'm looking for here.Anyone want to offer one?TIA for your time.

That is a lot of weight to be hanging off the back of that small 5er, you are placing about 10 percent of the dry weight off the rear. Will reduce pin by likely up to 400# (the axles are not a perfect fulcrum), and place a lot of rear of the axle making the 5er subject to sway induced by a heavy weight rear of the axles.

I would not worry. Maybe 30% of that weight will come off the pin. I would worry more about the frame itself and a good install should take care of that. Keep the rear holding tanks empty when you can to reduce the worry.

In talking to our "trailer guy", he had added a swivel wheel setup to one of his customer's FWs and he hated it. Ended up taking it off after only 1 or 2 trips because the FW was so unstable.Second thing that occurs to me is whether you =replaced= the OEM bumper tube or just braced it. Even with bracing, the OEM bumper still might be too light and weak for what you're trying to do. Again, JMO...Lyle

The only way you will know how the combo tows is hook up and go and the only way you will know how much pin weight is lost is get the trucks separate axles weights before and after. Sounds like the friend knows his business however 800 lbs hanging off the back of a trailer is a bunch of weight and can cause sway/handling issues. ST D tires will wallow like a drunk hog on ice Load E tires at 80 psi will help with carcass roll/sway issues.

Need some opinions on pin weight effects for....

I would put a receiver hitch on the front of the truck and carry the motorcycle on a carrier up front. No tail-heavy/light-pin issues, no trailer frame flexing/breaking issues, no double-tow issues...

Whether they are a "tote" or a "trailer" will depend on the DMV of the individual state. Some states consider anything attached that wasn't part of the original trailer as a trailer. FWIW I've pulled that through, and stayed in, several states, including Virginia, that don't allow double towing and never have had an issue. YMMV. I always considered it a trailer and had it licensed.

Not meaning to through another fly into the ointment but.....if you are going be putting the generator and such into the bed of your truck....how are the weights on the truck?????

After rereading your first post, you don't really know what your pin weight is so I would weigh before and after adding the weight on the back. You may not be happy with the results, and it's easier to change plans before you leave rather than on the road somewhere.
