Nev R Lube bearings

Is replacement possible by owner without special shop equipment for removing & pressing new bearings in?

I am thinking of carrying a couple as spares. So far originals seem fine but they have about 65,000 miles on them. Headed to Alaska so it is not like there is a trailer shop every 100 miles like anywhere S of Edmonton, AB.

  • our aircraft has sealed bearings in the flight controls, every 12 years they have to be pressure lubed, nifty little tool that forces grease into the sealed bearings, their are around 80 bearings and this insp cost lots of money and takes lots of man hrs. Would I want a sealed bearing on my axles? IMO, no I would not. but I am old school
  • most everything made by man can fail or wear out .... the OEM Nev-R-Lubs installed in our camper have been on the go since October of '05 .... no clue how many miles are on them but the number tops 100,000 .... I do carry a spare hub with one mounted but have never had to use it .... the next time I replace the brake pads I plan to order 3 more hubs and replace the originals .... based on their performance, I wouldn't want a camper without them .... no muss, no fuss, no bother

  • had a failure of one last year while towing. Failure also ruined the spindle so even if i had a spare unit i could not have used it. Also, the failure allowed the wheel to cock on the axle causing the tire to rub against the shock mount destroying the inner side wall of the tire. After that i would not do 'never-lube' bearings again. If you have a trailer with them on already i would have them replaced periodically, probably at least every 2 yr. Before we bought the trailer i questioned the practicality of the 'never-lube' setup & was told that very few failures have occurred which sounded good until i was one of the failures :(
  • I too was unsure of this so when I had mine installed , I purchased an extra drum with the 50 mm already pressed in.... It was discounted to $150.00 since I just dished out a larger lump for the original work...

After looking at it , I would think that anybody with a press would be fine... Just not something I would want to have to deal with on the side of the road....
