Be careful and make sure you get the correct bearing. The expensive ones are built to a higher tolerance and better lube. I found cheaper, name brand bearings that were the exact same size at my auto parts. Around $40 each but they are not made for the loads and stresses on our rigs.

I got Timkins from 'e trailer'. About $120 also.

That's right, not a cheap bearing. But these are a cartridge bearing assembly, not individual cups/cones and a seal like in some axles. I searched for awhile before finding some on sale. MSRP from Dexter was around $155.

Here is what it looks like when they fail. I changed an axle on the road.

Got the last wheel off this afternoon. Come to find out I need 2 more drums with bearings. Used the two already bought. Looks like I'll have to pick the best of the old ones on hand & go with that till I can arrange to pick up somewhere along our route next week.

The good news is, after doing 4 wheels each one has taken less time. Doing just the drum/bearing should be a snap.

One good thing about this experience is in a few days I will have the necessary tools to do a remote change if necessary. I will have a spare drum with bearing mounted all ready to go.

I am doing the job in a boatyard but even here I had to run out to borrow the 36mm spindle nut. Dexter, in their wisdom, is metric so my ample supply of everything else does not contain any 19mm sockets or ring spanners for the brake plates which are also being done.

Sheesh! Expensive week. Fresh rubber going on too. As a wheel comes off it is run over to the local garage to be changed while I do the brake & drum side of things.

I replaced two of the bearing about a year ago and on Monday I got the other bearing. I will replace the other two soon.

In Dec. 2009 the trailer had 61025 miles on it. I quit keeping a log at that time so we don't know how many miles it has now.
