I have a fiver with 8000# Dexter axles with never-lube bearings. Has anyone changed these bearing themselves? Do you really need a press to change the bearings?

Yes you need I believe a 12 ton press. You can buy the bearings off Amazon but you'll have to get them pressed in. Make certain that whoever does the press job gets all of the parts in place. Leaving a spacer ring out caused us all sorts of grief: wheel came flying off ect. And diagnosing the problem was tough. I finally took it to a machinist shop here and he spotted the problem and fixed it.People replace the axle to get rid of the Nevr Lubes.

Yes, I bought a spare hub with bearing already pressed in and a spare bearing to carry with me when traveling. Hardly anyone stocks them so that's why I carry them. I like them and have never had a problem but there are horror stories out there. When time to change out I will probably replace the hubs too, not much difference in price.

We're planning on Alaska next year and don't want to be broke down without a replacement in the middle of somewhere.

I changed ours out a few years back, I bought the bearings from Dexter and had a shop with a 50 ton press install them. I removed the snap ring that retains the bearing and it was a PITA. When we get to our homebase in the spring I'm going to convert to disk brakes so they will be changed again. Remember they are Never Lube not never replace or check. Denny

I have replaced all the bearings on my trailer and never needed to have the races pressed in or out. A brass drift and a hammer is all that is needed. I changed mine only because the trailer had a lot of miles on it. The bearings on one wheel only was showing wear but to avoid problems I replaced all bearings, brakes and magnets. Keeping them well lubed, not over lubed is the best way to make the last. Trailer is ten years old and has at least 75,000 miles on it now.bkick

People replace the axle to get rid of the Nevr Lubes.
