New 5th Wheel ------ Do I pay sales tax in Ohio???

I can't remember how much I paid in Indiana but the percent sales tax was less than Michigan. when I registered it in Michigan, they credited me the amount I paid in Indiana. IN other words , if the tax was 4% in Indiana, Michigan was 6 % so I had to pay the 4% in Indiana and then 2% in Michigan.

The point is it varies with states as well as dealerships and the info given is useful to others from other states having similar situations. Sheesh! lol

I bought my 5'er in NV and registered in AZ. AZ DMV requires owner pay AZ taxes minus any taxes paid in another state. AZ DMV required certified copy of sales record from dealer to be sent directly to DMV. Some NV dealers will charge the tax, others do not. Dealer gave a temporary transport plate so I could legally tow it to AZ. I paid full taxes at AZ DMV.

We purchased our 5er in Kansas had to sign a waiver statement that the rig was NOT going to be registered in Kansas. Had to pay sales tax in Illinois before they would title it there.

SOME states were hitting people up for sales tax, even though they had already paid in the state where they bought the FW. There was a recent article where IN is considering legislation (seems like it will pass) so that people can take delivery of a new RV =in= IN without having to worry about the possible double-taxation when they take it home.

When I bought my FW in Indiana about 3 years ago, I followed as their service manager pulled it into Illinois where I took delivery. If I had picked it up in Indiana I would have to pay sales tax their and NC.
No recipriocity(sp) between these 2 states then.

I bought an RV in IN. and paid the home state tax. The RV dealer said that is the protocol and it worked fine.

She says yes we do pay sales tax in Ohio.

When I bought out first 5'ver in Indiana did not pay sales tax.

I met a guy years ago who paid sales tax on an RV purchased out of state, then had his home state try and tax him again. They could not get the first state to refund the tax, either. They refused to register the RV in their home state and towed it for years without tags. They =tried= to register it every year, but were refused because of the tax issue and demanded the refusal in writing. They received several tickets and just carried a file with them with all the paperwork and let the officer know that they =would= see him in court. Last I knew, he was still towing it sans plates and had not paid a fine. (shrug)

How about this: you're both right. (See, I settled marital strife). When we bought our 5'er in Ohio we paid the Ohio tax. BUT, when we finished all the paperwork (rig is registered in SD) we got a check back from the dealership for the difference between Ohio tax and SD tax.
