We had ours go bad after we had the rig 3 years but the detector was more like 5 years old. It had a date on the back and a label that said to replace after 5 years. It would go off randomly for no reason scaring the******out of us. One night we had a camp out with nieces and nephews. My one of my nieces was sleep on the table made into a bed. The stupid detector would go off about every 15-30 minutes. I didn't find out until later but she was passing gas and causing it to go off. The table/bed was right across from the detector within about 3 feet. They are extremely sensitive devices. I have even heard of dog farts setting them off. I replaced mine myself they are very easy, only two screws and two wires. I had to cut one of my wires but I just re-attached it with a wire nut. We haven't had any problems since I replaced it.
