NEW RIG - 16 RAPTOR

My wife and I finally decided to upgrade to a 5th wheel TH from the bumper pull that we've had for a while now. We picked it up today and drove it home the nearly 180 miles or so from Billings.

WOW what a difference in the tow. I can't begin to explain how much nicer the 5th wheel tows compared to the bumper pull. We got a Raptor 300MP - it appears to be the last year of the floorplan and so we got a pretty decent deal on it.

Honestly it was kind of sad towing the old one to the dealer ... almost felt like a betrayer. The **** think was solid except for some minor things that tended to get under my skin. Anyways - just got home and couldn't wait to post the pic so here it is!

  • Nice lookin' rig. Floor plan is very close to our Fuzion 302TE.

We are just up the road from you in Fort Benton.

    Enjoy the new toy!
  • beautiful picture~nice rig

we just did the opposite :)

we sold the monster 5th toyhauler and went to smaller travel trailer toyhauler.
    funny
  • Yeah the wind hurts, especially in Montana. When I had my 27 foot that was probably 10k (don't trust the sticker but never had it weighed), I got 6mpg one trip from Billings to Bozeman. But 9-10 is still good, depending on speed.
  • The bumper pull was 30ft (33 with tongue). It was a Desert Fox made by Northwood and it was pretty heavy as well. Think it weighed in around 12k with all my stuff also it was about 11ft tall maybe 11.5. I was getting about 11mpg on the flats maybe 12 if I was lucky hauling that.

I stopped at the scales on my way home and this new one weighs in at 13'ish (I can't remember exact) and that was with a 1/2 tank of water (70 gallons and nothing else in in.) It's also about 13-13.5 ft tall. There is quite a bit more surface area for wind resistance on this guy. Over all I was getting about 9-10mpg on my tow home but to be fair it was mostly in a side/head wind which didn't help one bit.

So far though the comparison towing is night and day.
  • Looks good!!! I often travel through Montana and I currently have a 21 foot bumper pull. How big was your last TH? I have been debating going up to a small fifth wheel but I already don't get good gas mileage through Montana at 70 mph (in an 80 mph zone now LOL). How was your mileage compared to your last one? I have read mixed reviews on going to the heavier fifth wheel.
