New rig with tankless water heater

The new Jayco rig that we're in the market for has as standard equipment a tankless water heater. We are not full timers but average about 40 nights a year mostly state campgrounds and mostly without full hookups.
Would we have any regrets going with this tankless system?

Isn't the industry moving to tankless...good or bad?

They have been for twenty years. They haven't gotten it right yet. Have yet to hear anyone who is real happy with the tankless.
  • Never had one. How do they work if you are not plugged into shore power? If they require electricity, you'll never have hot water. Or if you are on solar power, I can see it draining batteries very, very fast! At least with the traditional RV water heater, they work on gas, and can operate with no dependency on AC electricity.
  • Absolutely stay away. I have had one in my house for 15 plus years and love it. We just bought a new fiver and hated the on demand water heater. If we camped with full hookups all the time it might be ok, just ok. Every time you turn the hot water faucet off it takes around 8 seconds before the tankless starts to make hot water, then heat the water sending cold water through the line the whole time. Navy shower?
Get wet, turn water off, soap up, turn water on to rinse. The water heater has to sense water flow, then turn on exhaust fan, then turn on the burner, then heat water, then get hot water from the water heater to the shower. Mine has been replaced and is stored in the barn.
  • I like tankless for home. Not so in RV. I am concerned someone in our clan would drain the fresh tank taking a long shower. I prefer LP tanked. Plus I am a skeptic. Seems when RV industry comes up with a new idea it is for their benefit not the consumers. For example pre fab walls, Plastic vents & caps, frameless windows? Seriously?
