New truck-bed to high for fiver hitch-advice please

Just picked up our new 2016 Dodge Ram 2500 Hemi. Was told by the dealership when we ordered it that it was the same height (the bed) as our 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 hemi. It is actually about 3 inches taller. This puts the fifth wheel camper to close to the sides of the truck. ( a clearance of only about 3 inches.

Any advice would be appreciated.
  • When I brought my 2015 3500 GMC home the bed was a lot higher then my 2006 2500 Chevy.
I kept measuring and trying to figure out what I had to do.
By looking at the pin box when 5th wheel was level and the height of the bed I would have 1 inch clearance. If I set the B&W at the lowest point. if I set the B&W hitch at the highest point it would calculate a 3 inch clearance.

Talking with my RV dealer we figured we were over thinking this but did have some back up plans.

Once we installed the hitch and I set the 5th wheel on I moved the B&W hitch to middle position and now I have 6 inches of clearance and did not have to do anything to 5th wheel. The 5th wheel is almost dead level now. As it turned out we were over thinking it.

    Good luck.
  • Either flip axles or look and see if they make a riser kit for your hitch. Worth looking into.

    You could flip the axles.

Please explain your issue a little clearer.

Is the issues height of bed rail from the ground or the height of the bed rail from the floor of the bed?

If you installed your existing hitch in a new TV with the same bed floor to rail height as your old TV you be fine other than towing nose high (To be discussed later). If the bed rail to ground height has changed, then you could be a little close at the tail gate.

    Which is it?

It would good to know what hitch you have, and how much adjustment youhave there and if your pin box as high or as low as it can go.

If you could post a picture of the current situation would be great.
  • I had the same problem with the 2014 Chevy 3500 Crew cab I purchased. What I did was loosen the pin box and lowered the pin 1 hole on pinbox. That was about 2 1/2" and let my pinbox clear the side rails when turning. By lowering the pin it raised the nose of the 5er. I probably could have gotten a different pin box but this was free rather than spending the high $$ for a new pinbox. Good Luck and Hope this works for you.
