I have a short bed one ton and a companion. Haven't needed a slider yet.
Before that I had a short bed 3/4 ton and a pro series non slide hitch. Flat front coachmen fifth wheel and never had a problem with that either.
Just be mindful of what's going on in tight situations and save your money.
