Newbie needs help with roof

Made major mistake, now we will pay the price as I can not dump this off on someone else. Bought our first camper 5th wheel toyhauler (07 KZ). I'll try and keep this short. Purchased in Jan. with rv in storage lot, only a couple of feet on each side. Bad idea could not stand back and get good view of it. While I was inside looking it over and checking for signs of water damage (none that I can see) wife went up on roof and said everything looked good and solid. Fast forward 3 months rv in store age area and hail storm rolls thru, takes out skylight and 4 of 5 vents. I get on roof to cover areas as more weather expected. I immediately notice the whole drivers side of roof is soft from edge about 6" in. Wife did not notice she went to center of roof and said everything was solid. I can not find any sign of water damage on the inside. My question is can I use the Eternabond tape along the whole roof edge to make sure I don't have any leak issues. I know I have problems there but I don't have the money to tear off the roof and fix it. I also can not dump this on someone else like it was done to me. Any suggestions and ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Yes
  • I did on mine, front to back, both sides. I had it come over the side onto the
metal corner about 1" (right above the vinyl insert) Did this 6 years ago and still holding strong.
Hope all goes well for you! Brian
  • good luck up there, have someone handy incase you need some help, clean the area's you going to tape with soap and a brush, eternabond is good stuff.
  • Thank you all for your help. I'm planning on doing that and then resealing the roof. Any suggestions on the best product for this? Thanks again
  • Everyone has their own ideas about what to use for resealing, A lot depends on what kind of roof you have, there are several kinds of material and many have different sealers to use. I used Snowroof and it's primer first but I have a rubber roof.

Sorry about not saying, it is a rubber roof. Thanks

Peoples opinions here are held dear to them. You can see than in some of the posts. I did my research and decided on a product I had used many times before with good results. Snowroof, it's a Sherwin Williams product with a long warranty. Not that I'll EVER use a warranty but I hope it represents a quality product. This is the primer from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/COATINGS-KST0000ES-16-Elastomeric-Undercoat-Primer/dp/B002PJ0U9A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499521087&sr=8-1&keywords=snow+roof+primer

It goes on with a Roller or brush and is water based so you need to use it when rain is not in the forecast (for whatever good that is at times) the roof needs to be clean, I used simple green and a scrub brush. all the seams need to be redone, I used this: https://www.amazon.com/Dicor-501LSW-1-Lap-Sealant-10-3/dp/B000BRF7QE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1499522012&sr=8-2&keywords=rv+sealant

Look for any cracks in the existing sealer where the rubber roof stops, around vents, antennas, at the front and back caps, I had a leak at my ladder I found in the sockets the pipe fit into, those leaks are real curse for rv,s new AND old. If you pick this sealer, be liberal with it, it self levels. Don't use any silicone products. they don't last, if you see any on the roof, it should pull right off.

the roof product that goes with that primer is this: Snowroof

This coating is brilliant white, the Suns reflections from it will sunburn you, wear shades. good luck, this it just what I used, there are many good products out there , just make sure their rated for a rubber roof.
  • Thank you so much for all your good information. I really appreciate all your help.
