Newby needs advice

Sweet deal and I'm jealous, maybe like a lot of other guys. Hope your trip to Florida works well, and the cold weather is coming.

Folks on this Forum are knowledgeable about weight and towing but don't let that get you down. It sounds like you have it covered.

Does Dodge do anything special with the suspension on these Ecodiesel trucks, a spring upgrade, possibly? Verndiesel, a member here, uses his Ecodiesel for delivering travel trailers and knows the truck's capability pretty well. He doesn't state anything bad about the suspension but for a guy like me that has used a 3/4 ton for the last 12 years, a "just adequate" suspension may be an irritation. Just curious, I guess. A new truck may be in my future.

My wife and I moved into our 272RLS by Highland Ridge on Sept28. We moved from PA to Virginia towing with the 2016 Ram 1500. We made all weigh-ins and got 13 mpg on the trip. We are headed to Florida soon.

I think it is true that this truck will be the limiting factor and that it will not be easy to full-time in a trailer that is suited to that truck. But there is no reason to be dismissive or hostile, especially since their career choice (to serve the country and to protect us) is why they did not get rich and can't now afford a monster truck. I am grateful to them and hope that their dreams come true.

Questions can be answered in a respectful and civil way. And believe it or not, comments that are phrased pleasantly are often given more weight than those that are mean-spirited.

Get a true 4-season trailer from one of the better manufacturers like Outdoors RV, Nash etc. They are heavier but built to last and are insulated far better than most. You will save a ton on heating and cooling if you go that way. All Outdoors RV trailers now come with thermo-pane windows and use marine grade plywood for roof and floors among other improvements. Read the owners forums for an indication of which maker stands behind their product.

I have a 23 foot Kodiak by Dutchman with a slide out and it comes in at just a shade below 5,000 We are actually looking at purchasing the new Dodge Ram 1/2 ton diesel to tow it with. In reading up on the truck the only thing I'm seeing that makes me hesitate is the gear ratio for the rear end ??? Maybe I read things wrong ?? I will continue to read this post with much interest .

When I started looking into RV'ing I always drooled over the larger rigs. Now that I'm into it for a little while, I'm liking the smaller ones. Now the smaller ones require a lot of downsizing in terms of what you need with you. You may have that part down pretty good with your experience in the service. Consider looking at some of the smaller rigs. If you stay in parts of the country where the weather is nice the outdoors becomes a part of your living space (except for rainy days).

Hey Maddog, since you are free to travel now, head for level ground. It will be easier on your truck than pulling hills or mountains and safer. #2 Get a sway bar so your trailer will be less likely to jackknife going down hill and go slow down hill and don't break quickly to avoid jackknifing. #3 Keep all truck fluids checked and changed as the truck will have a heavier demand. #4,look into working at campgrounds to off set rent etc. Google - work for RVers and Campers on the road - to find your specific needs. Lastly and most important as far as small space - you got married to be together - have fun and make it an adventure.

Well you have lots of advice but the choice is yours. The DW and I got along just fine in our 25 ft TT for two months bumming around the southwest with our dog. Others would need a 40 footer.

My F-150 has a max cargo capacity of 1411 lbs and is maxed out with two adults, a dog, truck cap and tongue weight.

Try renting a motor coach to see if you like the RV life.
