I've been lubing mine since new - ten years so far.
It moves faster and the motor labors less when it's lubed. I've always used a wet silicone spray and it has never had a build up of dirt or any other problems. However, I do lube it often like after a dusty or wet drive and I use the lube to clean it off.
It's clear to me that it's beneficial.
