Iceland! One of the best trips we have ever taken. We went in July so no northern lights but spectacular none the less! The first week we stayed in Reykjavik on our own and explored the city and surrounding areas. The second week, we took a guided tour in a small van (just 8 other couples) with a native Icelander as our guide. We took the Ring Road tour around the country. We learned so much history, heard lots of folklore, saw glaciers, Rhyolite Mountains, National Parks, black sand beaches, and so much more!
The cost was about what we have paid on other European jaunts, not that expensive, unless you want to stay at top of the line hotels and eat only 'American' food! We stayed in nice enough hotels - ate at lots of interesting, local cafes; out of the city the gas stations have some great cafes! Some airlines will let you stop and stay in Iceland for a few days if you are flying to Europe at no extra airfare.
If you do it, get out beyond Reykjavik and the infamous Golden Circle tour. It is a beautiful country! We would go back in a heartbeat!
