Number of spare tires

1 has always worked for me.

I have a second spare, mounted on a plain steel wheel, that I lock in the bed of my truck behind the hitch for long trips. Just cruising around that state I rely on the one under the trailer. BTW, my spares are both XPS ribs. If I am down to my last tire/tires, I want them to be as good as my ground tires. I see people who put old/used tires as a spare.

I carry 2 spares; one underneath the FW and one in my truck. I have 2 for the simple reason that I had to replace a single tire with an unmatched one while on a trip, so pulled it off and kept it as another spare. Spent $40 on a cheap steel rim from Discount and had them mount and balance it. Sits in my dad's shop until I'm ready to go.

We carry two spares; one on the back of the TT and the other inside the Suburban. We also incorporate those spares when rotating the tires every couple of years.

On one trip, BEFORE I replaced all my 6 china bombs with 6 Michelin XPS RIBS, I had three (3) blowouts. I show two here (1 blowout is shredded, 1 blowout with a cancer bubble, and the third blowout is still somewhere in Phoenix).





My 3 blowouts, was during the very HOT summer month of August on I-10, during the day. It was at least 104 in Tucson, and I remember it getting up to 114 degrees along the way (not counting the heat from the pavement). On the way back, I decided to drive at night!!

Since my 3 blowout trip, I’ve not had any more problems with tires since I now use XPS RIBS, and have replaced all my rubber value stems on my trailer (and Dulley Truck), with metal valve steams (I’ve since cooked the RIBs a couple of times in 105 degree summer heat – and all the tires came out very tasty).

Unfortunately, my 2 spares tires (not spare ribs) you see below are still china bombs, but if a RIB goes out, I’ll temporarily use a bomb to get to a tire dealer to order up more RIBS.

The tires have such a short life due to the 5 year age limit, not really worth worrying about anything beyond the first spare.

Ans: One spare.

From the first TT I owned in 1975, I never carried more than one.
(They all had 15" rims/tires)

Traveled all over the USA, border to border - N-S-E-W.
When still working, had every 3rd week off, and with trades, frequent month long vacations were E-Z.
So, covered a lot of ground!

*Never* had a flat. Maybe just luck, but I always used LT tires.
(Broke a leaf in a spring once).

Same now with the 5th.

When I spotted a screw in one of the factory supplied GY Marathons, didn't pull it out - took it to a tire shop. (Still holding air).
Yep it made it thru the carcass - and with it dismounted, I found out why the ST Marathons are more appropriately called - "ST Balloons".
(And why FE admitted to at least 22 STs on his 5th)

Anyway - back to... where to carry your bandoleers of spares:
Rear bumper. (if you have one)
Under rear of 5th, cranks down pickup style (factory location).
Lippert makes a spare tire "slide-out" that mounts under the front of 5ers.
Seems PPL was advertising something similar to Lippert by another mfgr.

Or - you could just upgrade to 16" rims and *quality* LT tires..:C

On our second fiver since '85 and have only had one flat. I use E rated truck tires and wont use ST tires.Not starting the tire war of words but just my 2 cents.
