My wife and I started shopping for a new fifth-wheel bunkhouse back in 1990. Initially we could find no fifth-wheel bunkhouses, only bunkhouse travel trailers. Dealers told us that it was because pickup trucks did not hold enough persons to necessitate a bunkhouse layout. That made some sense back then as extended cab and crew cab pickups were not all that common either. In 1992 Fleetwood (Prowler, Wilderness, & Terry) came out with their 29 5S model bunkhouse fifth-wheels. I am not sure which Fleetwood model lines offered the bunkhouse, but my wife & I bought a Prowler 29 5S that year. It always got a lot of attention in campgrounds during the first couple years we had it. Within a year or two, other manufacturers started offering bunkhouse fifth-wheel models. These did not have slide-outs. As I recall, only the very top end trailers had slide-outs back then. I am not sure when slides appeared in the bunkhouse models, but I would guess it was mid to later 90’s from what I recall.
I would say the quality of our 1992 Prowler, and most trailers back then, was very typical of the RV quality today (which I do not consider to be very good).
