out of state toyhauler purchase

Hey all, I am having a heck of a time buying a new toyhauler in Oregon. My tax home is in AZ. One would think the dealer would know how to make it happen. I do not want to relinquish my AZ residency to save a few bucks on taxes (buying in Oregon, no state tax). I will put out a call to my CPA in Az in the am and see what he says. What state is it titled in, registration, taxes, etc...It's a PIA to say least. Any input?
TIA,
Brooks
  • Heck I live in Oregon I went to Iowa and Texas to buy my last two toy haulers. Uusally the cost of shipping or transporting trailers to the west coast makes the Rigs cost more alot more...

I think your going to purchase the trailer in oregon get your temporary permit then pay the taxes in AZ when you register it.
  • Thanks guys. At this point, I would like to buy TH as if I just arrived in town, Get a 15 day permit, bring it to the park where are staying. Get another one when I leave Oregon in Nov. Shoot straight to AZ and pay my taxes and reg then. I am not willing to relinquish my tax home (az) to make this deal happen. Even insurance is giving me **** about it. "If it's not titled in Az have to start another policy in the purchase state. I hope this post helps others. I know people do this everyday though. Maybe certain states have relationships when it these situations come up, I don't know....

  • My guess is you're wanting to roll the out of state taxes & fees into the loan? That might be a challenge for some smaller dealerships, but seems if you contact AZ with the VIN you could get some sort of bill from the State of AZ, but maybe not. But does seem like the dealer should be able to communicate with the DMV in AZ if you can figure out who they need to talk with. Dealers in CA have figured out how to do deliveries and registrations in other States so it can be done.
  • As far as I know, you pay sales tax based on your home zip code. He give you a 60-90 day permit, you reg in az and pay Az taxes.
  • I live in North Carolina, earlier this year I purchased a TH in Ohio from a dealer. Paid no OH sales tax but paid NC sales tax when I registered it. I had a 30 day OH temp tag to get it home. People do this all the time.
