Has anyone had experience with the weight the manufacturer posts on their toyhauler? I'm curious how accurate they are. I have a 2008 WW that the unloaded weight is nowhere near what the tag says. Looking at replacing it now and I will not buy a new one unless I get to drag it across the scales first.

Looking for our last toy hauler, I bought a 5000 lb. capacity Sherline scale. I had little concern for the overall weight but since I have an SRW, I was very concerned with pin weight. The Sherline is not perfect but its fairly close. The Fuzion and the Vengeance we weighed were really close to the manufacturers specs. They both had generators so I assume that was the biggest difference from what the dry weight claim was versus real weights.As for the overall weight, I asked opinions about this a few months ago here on the forums. Most agreed you'd have to have a very special dealer to allow you to take a camper to the local scales before you pay any money.

WW was notorious for fudging numbers. There are threads all over the internet in regards to WW. Manufacturers are getting better on weights with newer trailers.

I think the manufacture's weight numbers have gotten better. Many dealers will weight them, but some play games. If you are concerned make the sale contingent on the weight numbers and have it weighed at at CAT scale or the dealership might have the portable pads.

We just purchased a new 2016 TH. Actual CAT scaled empty weight was 700 lbs. more than the empty weight specified on the front, right side yellow/white factory sticker. The batteries and propane certainly don't weigh 700 lbs., so not sure why the discrepancy. Like a lot of things in the RV industry, there's just no rhyme or reason, no standard. Notice a lot of folks use the right, front empty weight sticker (or worse a brochure) as a baseline for their loaded weight guess-timates---not a good idea. Take the time to go to a CAT scale to weigh your rig empty and loaded. Weigh again if you change your load/gear significantly. FWIW, I was looking at a 2006 WW bumper pull a few years ago. The white sticker in one of the cabinets said the UVW was 4180 lbs. We took it to a CAT scale. Empty weight (no water, no gear) was 5,400 lbs.

My first you hauler was a 2008 27 foot bumper pull advertised as a half ton towable and 5,500 dry (yellow stickers said 5,500). There's no way. I pulled with my 03 Chevy 6.0, my tuned 6.0 powerstroke, my stock 08 Duramax, my buddies built 95 powerstroke, and his built 00 powerstroke. Nothing pulled it well and my Ford 3/4 it squatted like I had 2,000 pounds of rock in the bed. I never had weighed, but the pin weight has to be over 1,500 pounds (the rear wheels were further back than most bumper pulls) and I guess it was 8,000 dry. My current 13 21 foot is listed at 5,200 dry and I feel that's about right. There should be a standard where every trailer is weighed by the dealer with all options. Clearly there's not.

You know, what you say isn't going to make the slightest difference to what I do, but there are newbies here who need good advice, which your wasn't.

Don't overload your tow vehicle plain and simple. Use actual trailer weights and truck manufacturers' maximum ratings.

It is a big deal. I'm waiting for a manufacturer to be sued cause someone in a trailer advertised at 12,000 pounds gvw was really 14,000 and caused an accident cause the truck was rated at 12,500. I'm far from the weight police on this site. But when I buy something, I expect the specs to be right.

No I read your whole post. What is "close"? Some would say 12,000 list when it's 13,000 is close. Which is enough to put someone over the limit. Especially when considering trailer tires and GVW. How hard is it to require them to be weighed at the dealer after installed options?

No kidding. What a bunch of rubbish. Are you saying everyone drives a "new" truck...

Just because trucks are getting more capable doesnt mean the RV industry should get a free pass on its history of poorly documented weights.

Before 2009 lots of manufacturers fudged the numbers. Weekend Warrior was ordered by the feds to issue new weight labels to owners of their trailers. The label they sent for my 2006 was 100 pounds more than the original but still not accurate.

The reason I am so set on accurate weight is because my current TH has a tag that says my UVW is 13,6xx. I weighed it just last week with basically nothing in it, 2 bicycles, 4 6vdc batteries, propane and a few odds and ends. It weighed 17,3xx. There is no way I had over 3500#'s of stuff in that trailer. WW fudged the numbers real hard on this unit.

If you think a "modern" truck can pull just about anything nowadays, you're fooling yourself. Remember, just because it can pull it up the hill, does not mean it can stop it going down the hill. If WW was still in business, they'd have a lawsuit on their hands right now.
