I guess I'm a different kind of RVer. :)
Movement doesn't bother us much for just a night, so I don't bother with dropping the gear.
Running out the slides when hitched is no problem although some think it is.
Yes, there is noise at Walmart, truck stops and other free spots, but it's not that bad. There are RV parks alongside freeways that are just as bad. The fact that the same people aren't there in the morning does not cause me to feel threatened. You save $30 to $40 that way, and I carry on-board protection.
As to shopping, do that at Walmart during the day. Stop and make lunch there and pick up any needed items.
I have installed a 12-volt TV and an extra battery. We also have a percolator for morning coffee. I take great joy in the self-contained attributes of the RV. That's a big part of RVing to me. Knowing you can stop almost anywhere and set up housekeeping. :)
The above is for when we are traveling point A to B. Otherwise, we are "vacationing," and we spend more time in RV parks.
We spend 4 to 5 months per year in the fifth wheel. :)
