Over night stops

Okay, we are new to Fifth-wheeling, we are heading out in a few weeks on a 5 day trip to Arizona for the winter. we plan on camping over-nights on the way there. what the general consensus of over-nighting?

There will be no need to unhook, as we will have the wifes vehicle following along with me if we need to make a run for chow or anything.

Sooo, my question is, what do I do with the RV, I will need to run out the slides, do I level, and Assuming I do, will I need to unhook the truck to level for an over-night?
do I just drop the front gear or completely level?

Thanks again, Gregg

  • We have only stayed at one Wally World RV Park, and I did not like it. The rigs around us in the morning were not the same one that were there when we went to bed.

400-450 miles a day for 5 days will wear you out pretty well. But I agree that if you are just getting there, then there is no reason to stop driving at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

Expect to pay extra for the second vehicle each night. Hope you have radio's to talk between the vehicles and cell phone's if you get separated. Set up a common contract to call if something happens! And remember that you have two drivers that will both be tired each evening.

Going through major cities, you can play leap frog to get into the correct lanes etc. Our first trip through Phoenix with the trailer was with another couple and we took turns letting each other "in" as we navigated the maze!

We plug in electric, drop front jacks, use park cable or bat wing for news, and try to leave the next day at around 8AM. 3.5 days from NW Washington the Gold Canyon, AZ - 1650 Miles. Usually stay at the same spots each year, as long as we do not have to go to the coast to get around snow on I-5 in Southern Oregon/Northern California.

    Good Luck and drive safely.

  • I will need to open atleast 2 slides to move around, that being said I will just run the 3rd out as well.
I wont be staying at any rest-stops or wally's, just campgrounds with pull-throughs for us on the way.
I only plan on about 400-450 miles per day at 62-65 MPH, just a nice leisurely pace and an early evening to relax in the campground with a few "pops".
  • No need to unhook.

Also no need to run out slides, unless you have to move one because of whatever floor-plan you have to get at the bathroom or bedroom.

Does not hurt to lower the front landing gear to stabilize a little more, even though you are hooked up. Also takes a little weight off the tow vehicle.
  • you usually won't be able to level if you are still hooked to the TV. You'll be able to get close. Mine is about 3 inches high in the front from true level when hitched.

Opening the slides will depend on the layout. you only NEED to open whatever to move around.
  • wal mart and cracker barrel are good spots go to the service desk and ask. most say ok.
