PA Drivers License Class

I am hearing conflicting statements about license class required. Some are saying if the fifth-wheel is over 10,000 Lbs I need a class A license. Other places say if the tow vehicle is over 26,000 Lbs you need a class A license. Others say if the combined weight is over 26,000 Lbs I need a class A license. I am waiting to hear back from Penn Dot on this matter.
  • Schlep 1967 had it correct. I called Penn Dot, he had to leave the phone three times to get the correct answer. If the combination is under 26,000 Lbs, no class A license is required.
    Thanks everyone for your input.
  • According to info on the Heavy Haulers Resource Guide PA requires:

RVs are exempted from CDL license. But a Class A license is required, i.e. non-CDL.
Above 26,000 lb GVWR or GCWR requires non-commercial Class A or B.

There are links to the state info on the site as well.

A lot of states have the non-CDL class A requirement and a lot of RV'ers (and LEOs) are not aware.

    Good luck with that..;)
  • Looking at the vehicle in your signature I highly doubt you are crossing the 26K line.
Example: My truck Ram 2500 Diesel is rated at 9,000 lbs with a max trailer weight of 12,850 lbs. Added together that's 21,850. Leaving 4,150 lbs before I get to the 26K mark.

    From PennDOT's website,
CLASS A (minimum age 18): Required to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, where the vehicle(s) being towed is/are in excess of 10,000 pounds. Example: Recreational Vehicle, when the towing vehicle is rated at 11,000 pounds and the vehicle towed is rated at 15,500 pounds (total combination weight of 26,500 pounds).

So if your combined gross weight rating for the truck and trailer are under 26,000 lbs, you do not need a class A.
If the combined GWR is over 26,000 lbs but the trailer is under 10,000 lbs, you do not need a class A.
If your combined GWR is over 26,000 lbs and your triler is over 10,000 lbs, you need a class A.

Used to live in PA about 8 years ago. Have a dually truck and a 5er. Truck is 8 T and the trailer is rated about 20 K lbs. I had a standard license at the time. Now, if you are taking on paying passengers you will need a class B. (Such as a taxi or school bus). You should be able to just call them and get an answer right away.
  • It will be hard to get a definite answer... the KICKER that everyone does not factor in is the small print...

    * As long as the RV is NOT used for commercial use *

I went threw this for a friend years back.. I have a CDL class A, so I am good to go...

My Father in law was a supervisor for YEARS at the Trevose barricks, NOBODY there had a clue about it...

Some in Harrisburg said you need a non commercial Class A . . Others said as long as your under 26k....

Truth be told - I , myself wouldn't worry about it if it was ME... but i cannot tell you to do so...

    I know this didn't help....
