Paint Issues With Grey 5th Wheels.

This week I saw three different grey colored 5th wheels with bad paint issues on the front caps. They appeared to be relatively new models, but the front caps were terribly faded. All three are here in Tucson at the park we are wintering at. So, if you are looking at 5th wheels, you may want to investigate for yourself the grey gel coat finishes.

  • My friend bought a new Greystone a few years ago and the front cap is faded real bad now. Mostly at the top of the cap. He said he is going to get it repainted because it looks so bad. It is stored inside an enclosed barn and used only for short trips. Nothing to do with the sun it appears.
  • I noticed my front cap fading shortly after I picked up my new ( 2013 left over) Wildcat in May. By the end of the season it was starting to look pretty bad. Took it to a local dealer for some warrenty work and spoke with the service manager adout it. I offered to call Forest River but he said no need, they would take care of it.

Two weeks later I stopped by the dealer and spoke to the manager, he said, "oh ya, I forgot to call you, it is in the paint shop now, Forest River is covering it." Thank you Forest River for backing up your product and to Harvey RV in Bangor for all your help.
  • I noticed the latest iteration of Artic Fox went with a
different color end cap...when I asked the local dealer
about it was told they ran in to problems with fade. So far
mine is doing good... but, I store in covered parking.
    I wouldn't mind a re-paint if ever necessary ,...
    sans the nose-job decals.

  • Very common across brands. Just go read brand forums. My Northwood has a brown front cap with fade at the top 1/3. Other Northwoods with grey caps are also experiencing fade. Jayco, Cedar Creek, Keystone are some that come to mind with fade issues. No rhyme or reason as some never get it. My doesn't sit in the hot AZ sun (I wish it did :))and is fading. JMO but IIRC there's a few manufactures that make the gel coated front caps for all trailers. Something isn't right with the process.
  • Two were Greystone, actually parked side by side, and the third one,...I forget the brand.
  • Been there...done that. Many rigs (all brands) began using colored gel coat say (for the sake of conversation) about 2010 or so. The gel coats had problems with color fading caused by UV. Our Heartland Big Country (2011) was gray. We were told by Heartland that the colored gel coat did not have a UV inhibitor. Although I was able to slow the fading by using Rejex, it eventually turned dingy gray/white. The only permanent fix is to have the caps painted. I think newer coaches have dealt with the fading issues.

  • Mine is a 2011, I spend most winters in AZ and I have no problems with my cap fading. The front decal is starting to show its age though.
  • Curious. Were they all same brand? Or different brand/manufacturer?
