My Parallax fan always made a lot noise but it wasn't high pitched. When mine failed it was the round toroidal core transformer that had a melt down. Every now and then we'd get a whiff of a burnt smell that would go away quickly.
I replaced mine with Progressive Dynamics PD9260 with the charge wizard. It was a easy switch. The Parallax didn't seem to have good reviews when I checked. The PD9260 had good reviews and with some shopping it was about a 175 shipping and all. I've been using for 2 yrs and it has done a fantastic job. Does a great job. Batteries use less water than any converter I've had.
