place to stay in DC area

TT: If you plan to use the WMATA (METRO) transit a lot while visiting DC, you can go online to their website HERE and purchase SmarTrip fare cards for everyone in your family. Very convenient and easy to use, and certainly beats having to screw around with the ticket machines in the stations. They are also "re-loadable" online or at machines in stations that handle SmarTrip cards. They are honored on both the Metro (trains) and Metrobus.
