Please Help. Can i tow my trailer with my truck?

Hey folks, new here. Having trouble calculating weight ratings. I am buying a new trailer and want to make sure my truck can handle it. I have a 2012 Ram2500 5.7 hemi with 3.73 rear end. I am buying a 2006 Crossroads Cruiser 29RE.

Please let me know if this trailer is within my trucks capabilities. Cheers!

  • Your 2500 Hemi powered truck has a 6010 RAWR and may have a 2600-2700 lb rear axle weight which leaves around 3300 lbs for a payload. Figure the hitch/folks and other stuff in the truck can leave around 2600-2700 lbs for a trailer hitch weight. The 2500 truck won't have any problems carrying that trailers hitch weight.

Motor wise your at max with those 3.73 gears and the Hemi. The truck can handle that size 5th wheel but will be a bit slow in the hills.

My 2500 Dodge/Cummins with 6000 RAWR pulling my 11200 lb 5er is in the 5200-5400 lb range on the rear axle. No issues for over 252k miles.

The chart posted seems to show that you could pull any travel trailer in the 10,000 pound range. It all depends on your truck's empty weight, and weight ready for camping with passengers.

Say the empty weight is 5900 pounds - gas engine and auto trans. Or 6,900 diesel engine and 6 speed auto. Add your passenger weight (or take it to a scale).

If you are considering a fifth wheel, consider a 3500 truck.. . . The pin weight on a 10,000 pound fifth wheel will be over 2,000 pounds, and your truck probably will not handle the 150 pound hitch, 2000 pound pin weight, and passengers, firewood ect.

    Good luck,

    Fred.
  • What I see is your maximum trailer weight is just over 10,000 pounds. That's what you can pull.

Run down this chart and see where your pickup fits in.
