When unhooking, do you folks NOT raise the FW to just separate the 2 coupler plates before pulling forward?
Yes, I do. I raise until I see the slightest movement between the plates, so I know all the trailer weight is on the landing gear, but not high enough that the bottom ring on the pin could bind the jaws. I think I'm being kind to my landing gear by doing that, plus the jaws release easier.
But all the methods mentioned still work fine. We're only talking 1/2" lower for the re-hitch. And I GOAL, so not a real issue. Sometimes I can see in my rear view mirror that I got the elevation right, and don't need to get out again. I also have a remote control for the landing gear, so I could sit behind the wheel and watch as I adjusted the elevation. But I find the remote to be, just one more thing to keep track of, and more trouble than it is worth, so it just sits in a drawer unused, mostly.
Your decision to continue to look, when in doubt, is the smart thing to do.
