Protecting Power Cord from Theft

The expensive power cord of our 2017 Jayco 5th wheel is detachable and we're concerned that it could be stolen. How should we secure it to protect it from theft?

  • Sounds like your dealer has heard of a lot more than have been reported here. Certainly not a common theft item or it would have been discussed frequently here.
  • By chance does your RV dealer sell nice power cords to use in place of the expensive OEM cords? :) I think your RV dealer is shining you on. I've never heard of anyone complaining about their cord being stolen, unless it was while the unit was in storage and the cord was stolen along with other stuff.

AFATG how would you secure the cord? It would take less time to turn off the power at the pedestal and cut the cord than it would take to unplug it. Just one of those things not to worry about.
  • Our RV dealer told us he has heard of a number of instances where these cords were stolen while the owners were out. The cord retails around $200. locally.
  • For most of those limited times I'm in an RV park with hookups I use a short cord purchased on EBay. It's plenty long. So, consider a less lucrative alternative.
  • AS mentioned you could spend the money and have the cord hard wired to the RV vs. having a detachable cord. However a thief could simply unplug cord and cut the hardwired cord with bolt cutters. There is no foolproof way to protect the cord.
YEs the cord could be stolen, but it is really not something to be concerned about.
  • Are you going to leave it out somewhere with no supervision?? If I was stealing, I would just take the whole rig.
  • That's a tough one. Your average crankster salvager will just cut the wire and ride off with whatever they can get on their stolen bicycle.
  • Why would anyone want it?? But if it is a concern, get it wired in direct instead of detachable. If you have to have detachable, have the attachment moved and wired inside lockable bin.
