I tow a similar size 5er with an 01 Ram 2500 CTD, I get no push pull, passing or being passed.
Time to go through the front end, I know it is a 4X2, not a 4X4, but that Cummins is HEAVY. Have the whole thing checked out , then get a steering box brace.
Bilstien 5100's all the way around, and if needed for leveling Air bags (not likely with that 5er).
Good 265/70-17-E tires properly inflated, and the drive should be relaxing.
He doesn't need a dually, it might help if you drove it, but my 01 has 275,000 miles and is nice and tight. Yes I did need to replace the ball joints.
If you scale it he is likely overweight, but so am I, over GVWR, under axles by 1,300#. The load isn't the issue, my guess is the front is just a bit tired, and the steering brace makes a difference.
Freeway should be zero stress always, and with these steps these 55 mph State highways should also be no stress.
Yes these were taken towing the 5er, at 55 mph or better.
