X3...This is the correct answer. Others suggest you raise the elevator legs until you see a gap. That brings on potential problems. If raised too high, the hub on the bottom of the kingpin can upset the steel area around the jaw. And when that happens, you can find that the jaw does not close completely. These hitches are pretty precision. Mushrooming some of the steel, throws off the tolerances and the hitch will hang up.
My recommendation is to back into the hitch to relieve the tension on the jaw. Then the handle will pull easily and the jaws will disengage completely. This is the right way to do it.
And yes... you gave the wife the right answer. There are some things you can cheap out on. The hitch is NOT one of them.
