One of the biggest causes of the 'smell' is placing a hot toy in a closed environment. The heat from the engine heats the fuel, causes the fumes to expand and exit via the vent tube. If I load my street or dirt bike when hot, it smells. If I let them cool outside then load them, no smell.
I don't have any air scoops on the sides/top for fresh air other than the standard roof vents. I've never had an issue with fumes. If it has a petcock, shut if off.
