Questions for double pulling

I am considering having a hitch put on the back of my Bighorn 5th wheel so that I can pull my ATVs to Colorado. I see this being done frequently. I have a 2013 GMC 3500 Duramax Dually so pulling shouldn't be a problem. My biggest concern is how to hitch up the ATV trailer to the 5th wheel. My ATV trailer is too heavy to manhandle and hitch to the 5th wheel. I always back the truck into the ATV trailer, but how do you hitch to a 5th wheel? Where do I find info on what states will not allow double pulling?

A possible solution for your trailer is to install a double wheel tongue jack. Roll the trailer up to the 5th wheel empty, hookup than load the ATV's on.

That is probably what I will do. Hadn't thought about maneuvering the ATV trailer without the ATVs on the trailer. With a wheel on the tongue jack, I could move the trailer around enough to hitch it up. Not too worried about Lippert and a warranty. It takes an act of Congress to get them to do anything!

When we haul our 21' boat (way too heavy to move around), I back the 5ver to the boat and hitch it up that way. Wife spots for me and it works great. A bit harder than backing the truck to the trailer along but no much.

X2. Not a big deal at all. I can do it by myself when needed, just get plenty of exercise walking back and checking how I am lined up.

I can't help you with other states, but Colorado is good to go with double tow. 70' length, but I have never heard or seen that enforced.

I have a tandem axle landscape trailer & move it this way providing the ground is reasonably level. eHoefler is correct you will void the warranty. I see many double towing though. I'm considering it myself. Where I live we can double tow up to 75'. Dealer has offered to install a hitch providing I don't overload it. I plan to tow 1,500 pounds total. You will have to check the laws in each state you plan to visit.
    Good luck.
  • Check with the manufacture of the Bighorn. Lippert, the manufacture of the frame, will void your warranty on the frame. Max length in most states is 65', check with the DOT of the states you plan to travel through.
