Ram 2500HD

We have a 2016 Ram 2500HD with the 6.7CTD. Specs say it will tow 17,200lbs.
Looking at Forest River Surveyor 299RLOK. It will be our first 5th wheel, not our first RV, (previous 26ft bunkhouse and 34ft class A).
The 5er weighs in at 9038 with a hitch weight of 1498 and a carry capacity of 2860. Will we be able to tow this safely ?

For comparison - I just bought a 9040# dry 5th wheel and when loaded up and ready to camp I'm at about 10,500#. That's with not much water in any of the tanks. I carry what I'd consider to be an average amount of stuff.

The concept of "use the trailer's GVW" is not always the best advice IMO. Some have 1200# between dry and max weight, some have 4000# between the two. I don't think many people pay that much attention. People just load what they are going to load for the most part.

Your setup looks like it will be great.

Thing is, that's the only #'s we have to go on, unless you can find an identically fitted-out model and have it scaled. You do have to plan for a worst-case scenario, which I would consider to be having completely full black and grey tanks =plus= all your stuff. It =can= happen, so you need to prepare for it. I've had 2 instances where I had to tow home with near-full waste tanks because my favored dump station was closed and was running on a time crunch.

Do yourself a favor and use the 5er's GVW, (which I think is 9038 + 2860 =11,898#, correct?), no one tows "dry" or "empty" weight..If 11,898#,a more realistic pin weight will actually be more like 2200# or a little higher....No more than this 5er weighs, right at 12K, don't see a problem.

    X2

Your 2016 RAM 2500 is more than capable to tow and carry that 5vr at 12,000#

YES a 16K 5th wheel hitch is more than adequate for that 12K 5vr.
    BRAND of your choice.
  • :)Thanks for all the input. One more question, the dealer says we are good to go with the Pull-Rite Superglide 16K. Yes?

It's now what you can TOW, it's what you can CARRY that's the crucial # to worry about. Check the yellow sticker on your truck's door to get the actual payload for =your= truck. Now, subtract the weight of any other passenger(s) going with you, any "stuff" you want to carry in the truck and about 200 lbs for a FW hitch. The number left over is the actual max payload you can carry. You also need to be sure that you don't exceed the RAWR (rear axle capacity) or tire capacity. Since you already have the truck, load it like you expect you might do to go camping and =weigh= it. Front axle, rear axle and total weight. If you already have the hitch, or know what you want, add that # in, too.

As for the FW, =never= do any calculations on the "dry" weights. You don't travel with an empty trailer, do you? The only way you can conservatively come up with any numbers is to take the GVW of the model(s) you're interested in, take about 20-22% of the GVW as an =estimate= of the loaded pin weight, and see if that will work within your net payload.

  • Is that 17,200 lbs rating your trailer pull max rating? Check the Ram site, the rating posted by Ram are higher for pulling a 5th wheel than they are for pulling a travel trailer by about 3,000 lbs higher.

You will be close to GVWR or a tad over as stated before. Does the Ram have air or coil springs.
As far as pulling the 5er, I pull one the same size with my 2001 2500 and have no issues.
  • You may be a little bit over your GVWR all loaded up and ready to go, but well under your axle and tire ratings. I wouldn't hesitate with that combo.
