Ramp awning?

We had a ramp room on our previous toyhauler, but putting the awning up was a pain. You had to slide the fabric in a rail near the top of the toyhauler, assemble the frame. and hold it in position while attaching the frame to the fitting on the wall. Was slow to assemble and take down.

I have seen a few truck campers with a standard roll up awning mounted on the back. Works just like the ones on the side of the trailer. Flip a lever, roll it out, and adjust the support bars.

Has anyone seen this type of awning mounted on the back of a toyhauler? We really like having our "deck" while camping, and a cover would be nice.

The awning bars might have to be mounted wider than the trailer body so the ramp latch system has clearance, but it probably wouldn't stick out much more than the side mounted awning.

I can see it now. Level the trailer, drop the ramp, hook up the ramp support chains, then pull the awning out. Instant patio. Would be quicker to roll up if wind hit also.

Any input on this?

  • Dometic makes a manual awning for the rear of toyhaulers. It is part of the party patio package on most, but it can be added without the full package. They seem to run around $700 for the parts. I was able to install it myself with the help of my 13 year old son, but it would be pretty awkward and heavy to handle by yourself.

Mine cranks out manually and it has arms that fold out and attach to brackets on the rear of the trailer to support the awning. It works fairly well.
  • That's good news. Do you have any pictures or a model number?
Also, is there any problem opening it if you are on the short side?

I'll get on Dometics site and check it out.

  • It is virtually impossible to open the awning and mount the arms without being on either a ladder or the ramp door if you have the cables to make it a flat deck. I'm 6'2" and I don't think I can reach the arms to fold them out from the ground depending on how the slope of the ground has affected trailer height from leveling. Overall it is relatively easy to use. I'll see if I can get you a model number when I get home tonight.
  • Thanks, the only thing I saw on the Dometic site was a screen room, but I don't think that's what you are talking about.

The same thing came as part of my patio package. Works great.
  • so are the toy haulers that come equiped with the electric rear awning, is that not the same as the awnings on the side of the TH?
  • Mine has the rear awning. It is manual with a hand crank to extend and retract it.

I do not use the "legs" on each side as it supports itself with the arms in the awning. To be honest, I didn't even know there were legs that drop down until I saw it on one of the show trailers. I see the legs in there but I can figure out how to get them to come out. I imagine they would be good if you had a strong wind kick up to stabilize it.
  • Other than the picture above, there is nothing on the Dometic site that I can find about the screen room.

Where does this one stow? Inside between the ramp and beds?

Does anyone have a part number or a link that shows where to get this, and how much it is?

is there and laternate manufacturer that make a similar item?

    Thanks, Sam
  • google Dometic extend a room

Got mine thru amazon the cheapest
  • I did find the instructions for the Dometic extend a room. Unless there's a different newer version, it looks like you have to assemble loose poles and stretch the cover over it. That's what we had to do on the old Carefree version.

There has been some mention of a "crank it out" type of cover, and from various pictures of new trailers, It looks like there are rear awnings like the standard roll up side awnings. That's what i'm looking for, but have yet to find them.
