A couple thoughts. Even after 37+ years of driving semi's I visually check my 5th wheel jaws , handle and pull test. If I park somewhere , when I come back to the rig I re-check it and do a walk around in case some low-life messed with it.
Now as for our own 5th wheel I do the same and also added a little "insurance". I installed a Bed Saver. That is in case I have a "senior moment".
