It's only as good as the condition it's in. The Chevy Duramax is a proven platform. New engine? Axles checked? Getting rid of a truck after buying tires? Raises too many flags for me already.
There are plenty of diesel trucks to pick from and any recent 1-ton will do. Doesn't require overthinking it honestly. About the only thing I would avoid is a 6.0 Ford. Older or newer Fords are fine. Chevy Duramax's are fine in about every year as are the Ram with the Cummins engines. Some years of the ram are more desirable than others but all are capable.
When you have a candidate take it to a mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection. An Internet forum is not going to spot any issues with an individual vehicle. No number of threads will offset an hour with a good diesel mechanic.
