I will toss this out for the Duramax pullers with the six speed Allison. I usually pull between 60 and 65 mph.
I drop it down out of 6th to 5th. I find that the mileage does not drop off any doing this. Some short runs was actually better in 5th. There is less gear shifting when pulling hills as a added benefit. The engine is breathing well and getting more air for the fuel to burn better.
Another situation, a friend of mine helps his neighbor farm. The owner gears up lowers RPM for a field operation. He had told Don what gear and RPM he was using. When Don when out he dropped it down a gear and increased the RPM. Same field speed and acres covered.
At the end of the day fuel use was down 4 gallons.
