The rack is my design with a local fab shop doing the fitting and welding. The material is 6061-T6 aluminum. It weighs less than 100# and could carry a lot more than the kayaks and bikes. I wanted something that I wouldn't have to worry about on our 10,000 km trip from Vancouver Island to Toronto and back.
It was a little tricky managing the design of the headache rack as it had to clear the back of the cab and still permit tight turns with the 5er. It looks bulky but it is very solid, no vibrations (loaded) and it does not sound either, at speeds to 115 kph (70 mph).
