I see it like this. The skid plate it there to guard against damaging the frame. If you start to drag the skid plate, you should stop, backup, and take a do over. Beefing up the skid plate, tying the two together, or whatever, may put too much stress, torque, pressure, etc. on the frame and bend it. Stop and take a do over, don't continue on until something bends.
