The jaws on the R20 are almost as thick as the recess they latch onto in the pin. If you lift the 5er to get daylight between the hitch head and the pin plate, you could be pulling up on the bottom of the jaws with the lower part of the pin, this would make it hard to release.
You're right, it's a small window, but there is room before putting pressure on the bottom of the jaws with the wider diameter of the pin. It is that small window where I unhitch, but like I said, I'm willing to try unhitching the jaws while the pin is still on the hitch. If that's easier, that's what I'll do.
