The key to success is still going to be, making sure the truck is not putting forward force against the pin. Make sure the truck is putting rearward force on the pin while pulling the release handle. If you're parked on a slope toward the front, most trucks will have enough play in the parking brake and transmission park pawl that they will still roll forward an inch or so when you take your foot off the service brake. And that's all it takes to lock up those Reese jaws.
I believe that is your problem, not upward force on the jaws, even though I agree that that can be an issue.
