My 2015 raptor has the refer in the slide and it works just fine both on gas and electric. It is a 12 cf quad door Dometic. I hear fans running sometimes but they are very quiet.
I don't know why your mechanic said you'd have to run your generator with a residential refer. Most run them off of an inverter. In an older camper I ran a 6 CF dorm refer while my cooling unit was being replaced. I camped for a week that way running it on the inverter. I didn't run my generator much more than normal to charge my batteries.
