Put a padlock on the release mechanism. I always use one when the trailer is attached, no matter what the situation.

It really isn't as difficult as you make it out to be. Yes, you do have to get your truck lined up pretty close, but the hitch pivots both side to side and front to back, so there is enough play to seat the hitch by lowering it slowly and nudging the tabs to align them.
